How to Play 13-Card Indian Rummy: Rules, Sequences & Point Calculation
1. Objective of 13-Card Indian Rummy
13-Card Indian Rummy is a classic skill-based card game played between 2 to 6 players using one or two standard 52-card decks plus printed Jokers.
The primary objective is to arrange all 13 cards dealt to you into valid sequences (runs) and sets (books). To make a legal winning declaration, your hand must satisfy two mandatory criteria:
- At least two sequences are required.
- At least one pure sequence (without any Joker replacement) is mandatory.
2. Valid Sequences vs. Valid Sets
Understanding how combinations are formed is the cornerstone of winning consistently on Boss Rummy tables.
A. Pure Sequence (Mandatory)
A pure sequence is a group of three or more consecutive cards belonging to the exact same suit, created without using any Joker.
Examples: 4♠ - 5♠ - 6♠ or 9♥ - 10♥ - J♥ - Q♥. An Ace can be used as low (A-2-3) or high (Q-K-A).
B. Impure Sequence
An impure sequence is a group of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit where one or more cards are substituted by a Wildcard Joker or Printed Joker.
Example: 4♦ - 5♦ - [PJ] - 7♦ (where PJ is a Printed Joker replacing 6♦).
C. Valid Sets
A set consists of three or four cards of the same face rank but from different suits. A set can never have two cards of the same suit.
Example: 7♠ - 7♥ - 7♦ (Valid 3-card set) or K♠ - K♥ - [WJ] - K♦ (Valid with Joker).
3. Wildcard Jokers vs. Printed Jokers
Jokers play a crucial role in forming impure sequences and sets:
- Printed Joker: The standard Joker card showing the jester image.
- Wildcard Joker: At the beginning of each deal, one random card is drawn from the closed deck and placed face-up (for example, the 6 of Hearts). All four 6s (6♠, 6♥, 6♦, 6♣) become Wildcard Jokers for that deal!
4. Round-by-Round Gameplay Flow
Each turn on Boss Rummy follows a seamless two-step mechanic:
- Pick a Card: Draw either the face-down unknown card from the closed deck, or the top card from the open discard pile.
- Discard a Card: Discard one unwanted card onto the open pile to keep your hand at exactly 13 cards.
5. Point Calculation & Negative Penalties
In Points Rummy, each point has a predetermined monetary value. The player who declares with 0 points wins, and losing players pay points based on the unarranged cards left in their hands:
- Face Cards (A, K, Q, J): 10 points each
- Number Cards (2 through 10): Equal to their face value (e.g., 5 = 5 points)
- Jokers (Wild or Printed): 0 points
- Maximum Penalty Cap: 80 points per deal
- First Drop (giving up without drawing): 20 points penalty
- Middle Drop (giving up during the round): 40 points penalty
6. How to Make a Valid Declaration
When all your 13 cards are properly arranged into valid sequences and sets with at least one pure sequence, place your 14th discarded card into the "Finish Slot" and click "Declare".
Review the full hand before declaring. Validation and settlement follow the selected table’s rules; response time is not guaranteed.
